2008 Predictions: Getting Your Game On

While most marketers weren’t the first in line to try new marketing platforms in 2007, we’ll begin to see more brands involved in new channels next year. Consumer adoption and turn key solutions will drive marketers into new spaces.

2008 Predictions: Cut the wires

“One word. Just one word. Plastics.” That was the line from the 1967 movie “The Graduate.” But in 2008, that one word is “Wireless.”

The shift to wireless is upon us and will only accelerate. It will take many forms, but you can bet that consumers will be thinking about it front and center. Their interest is about reducing complexity, increasing convenience, and having the information they want where they want it. I observed an interesting phenomenon in ‘07. And I think it’s a harbinger for ‘08 and beyond.

2008 Predictions: Online Trends in Financial Services

I spend most of my time working in the financial services space. Part of my role is to keep a tab on developments in online financial services as well as have an opinion on whether these developments are important to our work or not. As 2008 begins to unfold, here are four trends I’m thinking about and expect to see develop over the course of the year:

  1. Banks get serious about customer experience
  2. Mobile banking still isn’t ready for prime time
  3. Metrics drive experience design decisions
  4. Banks look to innovative personal financial management start-ups for inspiration

2008 Predictions: Identity Crash

Sometimes, having a cool wand can be a career limiting move.

We’re all familiar with the stories about people running into problems when their private and professional paths cross in the online space. They aren’t new, but up to this point they’ve been curiosities to the average web user. My prediction is that this will change in 2008. The coming year will bring the collision of fronts to the online masses. This will be due in no small part to a continuing increase in social network usage. It’s going to be messy in the short term, but in the long term we’ll see real advances in how to design experiences that give people better control of their digital footprints. That being said, we won’t get to that place without a little pain. Read on to see why I think we’re in for a bumpy ride.

2008 Predictions: History Repeating

The word is about, there’s something evolving
Whatever may come, the world keeps revolving
They say the next big thing is here
That the revolution’s near
But to me it seems quite clear
That it’s all just a little bit
of history repeating
- History Repeating, Shirley Bassey

I love this song for two reasons: First, it’s Shirley Bassey. How could you possibly go wrong with that? Second, it’s because this song itself was the subject of the very topic we talk about a lot: remixing.

Sound familiar? It should — we’re doing the same thing online every day.
