‘Expected: Child’: Facebook Welcomes Fetuses to Social Media

If you’re already sick of friends posting photos of their children on Facebook, then this article is probably not for you. It’s no shock to anyone using Facebook that people use the social networking site for far more than just connecting with friends. They use it as a forum to post photos of their friends and families, life milestones and events. Facebook is now offering these social media sharers the option to add their unborn children to their online family trees. When listing family members, Facebook now offers parents-to-be the option to add in that they are expecting a child. As a younger generation is now growing up with Facebook as a part of everyday life, what happens when we extend those babies who haven’t even been born yet? Children without actual footprints have a social footprint before they are even born.

While each upcoming generation will obviously have a different relationship with social media than the ones before them, it’s hard for me to get on board with parents who are creating these digital lives for their children before they are even able to type on a computer. Of course there have always been overbearing parents, but by establishing any type of digital footprint for your child before they have even come into the world is taking that to a whole new level.

While the idea of giving unborn children a digital footprint makes me uncomfortable, there are obviously those who disagree. So what do you think? Is it odd for unborn children to have a presence on social media sites?
