What makes a great blog? For many bloggers, this question has an easy answer. Frequent posting, reader engagement, informative information, and visuals are all key to making a blog feel exciting and relevant. Klout Gets $8.5M to Create the Page Rank of the Social Web
Measuring social media influence is a tricky task and there are plenty of start-ups out there who are willing to help. But Klout, one of the upcoming leaders in the social measurement field, has just pulled in front of the pack by receiving $8.5 million from Kleiner Perkins Caulfield Byers. They have received this funding in hopes that they will be able to come up with a page ranking of the social web.

WordPress challenges bloggers to post daily in 2011
If you’ve already made your new years resolutions for 2011, whip that list back out because WordPress has one more for you to add. WordPress is challenging users to create at least one blog post each day for 2011. There are dedicated tags (postaday2011?) that users can use in order to make sure their posts are counting. While this may seem like an intimidated feat for many, WordPress has also included a list of inspirational and evocative topics for users to check, just in case writers block pops up during the 365-day adventure.

Schweppes App Lets You Hack Your Facebook Profile

Ever since Facebooks latest redesign, users everywhere have been coming up with ways to display their creativity using the photo stream at the top of profile pages. Schweppes, and Amsterdam-based digital agency, Super Social, have decided to get in on the action as well. Their latest app allows users to use one profile photo to spread across the entire photo stream. Check out this video for full details, and to learn how to “hack” your profile as well.

Facebook Users Uploaded A Record 750 Million Photos Over New Year’s
After all of the celebrating, it seems that most Facebook users rushed straight to their computers to upload their New Years photos. In fact, all of these users set a Facebook record and uploaded 750 Million photos to the site. Most of the time, the average daily number of photo uploads is around 100 Million, but due to this crazy huge influx of photos over the holidays, that number is now higher. Looks like Facebook has more to celebrate this year than simply the new year!

We hope you have been enjoying the weekly installments of “Social Six” so far! We will be taking a few weeks off to celebrate the holidays in style, but will be back in full force for 2011. See you all there!

Social Media Is Greater Marketing Priority for Small Businesses
While big businesses are still in the lead when it comes to social media usage, but small businesses are now catching up. According to a new survey, small businesses consider word of mouth to be the most important marketing tactic in their arsenal. Facebook was ranked as the third most influential tool for small businesses, only behind websites and email.  While big businesses still ranked Facebook as far more important, this is still a big step for small companies in the right direction.

Ed Norton: activism not just for actors
If you love Ed Norton (who doesn’t?) and good causes (again, who doesn’t?), check out this video. Norton has co-founded a site, crowdrise.com, in order to help bring social media and activism to one place. The site offers incentives on donating to good causes. For example, for the holidays they have provided e-cards that can be sent to friends and families, in which the money goes straight to a good cause.  With so many sites appearing dedicated to social good, it is a nice opportunity to donate during the holiday season.

2010: ‘Twas The Year Of Mobile Apps, LBS And A Huge Surge In Data Traffic
2010 was the year of mobile. No one would dispute this statement. But plenty of the actual statistics are unknown amongst everyday users. A new video by MobileFuture lays out all of the specifics. There were five billion apps downloaded this year, a 347% growth in Twitter mobile usage and 200 million mobile Facebook users.  It has been a historic year for all things mobile, location based and social media, so check out this video for some cool stats to impress your friends with at holiday parties.

Facebook co-founder launches social network Jumo for social good
When one of the co-founders of Facebook launches a new social network, people expect it to be good. So, Chris Hughes had a lot riding on his shoulders when he decided to launch a “social good” networking site that would allow users to connect with their favorite causes. But the launch of Jumo is aiming to do just that. With a similar set up to Facebook, Jumo will allow charities and organizations to create pages, while users can follow their favorite causes. While this form of charity is often referred to as “slacktivisim”, Hughes is certain that the site will be the start of more actionable donations. According to Hughes, interacting with the Jumo site “doesn’t mean that they don’t then go out and do things like knock on doors and go to protests or go to rallies or go volunteer or donate. They do do these things.”

Google unveils Hotpot, a recommendation engine for Places
In the midst of all the excitement surrounding Facebook messages this week, Google has also managed to unveil an exciting new feature.  Hotpot will be a location based recommendation engine. Google will encourage users to create reviews and ratings of a location, in order for them to recommend them to other users. This is an extremely user based experience, not just for tech junkies or businesses. It is aimed at the average user and encourages them to participate. There will also be a social aspect, allowing users to connect with their friends through their Gmail account.

Slap A QR Code On That Product So That People Can Like It

QR codes have become all the rage recently. The funny little squares are popping up on all types of products, allowing consumers to snap photos with their phones and find out more about what the product has to offer. Now, a Belgian company, Boondoggle Lifelabs, has created a service that will allow users who use QR codes to automatically “Like” the products Facebook page. In addition to taking users to a specific landing page, it will also let them automatically “Like” the product or brand. It is an extremely convenient way to show your passion for a product with just the snap of a camera phone.

Unsocial: Foursquare Plus LinkedIn Minus All Your Friends

Up until now, social media has been all about who you know. Apps are based around your friends, what they are doing and where they are doing it. But now, a new app called Unsocial may be changing all of that. Unsocial focuses more on who you should know, rather than who you do know. The setup is simple. Unsocial links to users Linkedin accounts and allows users to tag certain terms to their account (i.e. marketing, social media, journalism etc.). The app then aggregates users in the nearby area that the user might be interested in getting to know.
